For help in translating the many languages of Earth, the Vulcans have come up with names for Terran things. This is especially true for the rich animal life of Earth, since the Vulcans' own planet has had limited biodiversity for most of their recorded history. Be aware that all cetaceans are now legally considered to be sentient beings by the Federation, so a cetacean is a "situhssu", not a "situhsfa". Harming a whale or dolphin is considered the same crime as with any other sentient lifeform. Telepathic beings have regular contact with whales and dolphins. Universal translators have been updated to translate cetacean languages. There are number of recognized "delfinese" languages, for example.

Before World War III on Earth, the study of cetaceans had increased dramatically and computers were beginning to decode the languages of whales and dolphins. Unfortunately, most of the non-prehistoric animals listed were extinct by the time of the Third World War or shortly afterwards. In the many years after the Atomic Horror, the oceans of the world recovered and sealife began to fill the oceans of the world again, but the seas were a much quieter place than they had been. The songs of whales were thought lost forever. The only surviving cetaceans during the time of the UFP were orcas and several dolphin species, including the bottlenose dolphin and the spotted dolphin. All whale species had gone extinct.

The humpback whale was restored to Earth by Captain James Kirk and his crew during the Alien Probe incident, and continues to recover. More humpbacks were brought forward soon after this near disaster. More reintroductions have taken place since then, including the gray whale, the fin whale, the sperm whale, the beluga, the narwhal and several more dolphin species, using the same time warp technique. Plans are being made to recover blue whales, pilot whales, minke whales, right whales and sei whales. Although the Federation Charter prohibits most time travel and the Prime Directive usually has paramount importance, this project was deemed vital to prevent future negative encounters with the unknown Alien Probe species. Dr. Gillian Taylor, who came from the 20th Century C.E., was in charge of the early UFP Terran whale project and helped train a new generation of scientists in cetology. The oceans of Earth are alive with whale songs again. The Earth is one of the few planets with multiple native sentient species.
