The very ancient age of wooden sailing ships was quite short on Vulcan, mainly due to the lack of suitable timber and the shrinking seas. The Vulcans swiftly converted to metal and artificial materials to construct sea-going craft. Sails were replaced by various forms of steam-powered vessels. The oceans were gone before the development of gas turbines, nuclear-powered vessels or submarines. Despite being mostly a desert planet since civilization arose, Vulcan still had a fairly rich nautical history before modern times, although there were few truly maritime powers. The Vulcans are fascinated by the very long period of sea-going ships on Earth and several other Class M planets.

Below you will find Terran terms relating to military and civilian ships, sailing and the sea from ancient times through the Age of Sail, Age of Steam, passenger liners and modern times, as well as lighthouses.
