Soon after first contact with Earth, the Vulcans began an intensive project to translate major works of human literature into their languages. It was felt that this was important in order to better understand humans. These translations rapidly increased after the founding of the United Federation of Planets. One of these major works was the Bhagavad-Gita (Song of God), the revered ancient text from the Indian subcontinent.

Below is a small sample of the translation from this epic text. If new portions become available, they will be placed online for all to study and enjoy.

1: The Hesitation and Grief of Arjun

    The Question

    Dhritaraashtra said:
"Assembled on the holy field, on the field of the Kurus, ready for battle, what did my sons and the sons of Pandu do, Sanjaya?"

    Sanjaya said:
"O King, after seeing the soldiers of the Pandavas in military arrangement, Duryodhana then approached the teacher and spoke [these] words"

"Behold this, O teacher, the great military force of the sons of Pandu, arranged by the son of Drupada, your intelligent disciple."

"Here are many mighty warriors, equal to Bhima and Arjuna in fighting. Yuyudhana, Virata and Drupada are great fighters."

"Dhristaketu, Chekitana and Kashiraj are also very powerful. Purujit, Kuntibhoja and Shaibya are champions in society."

"Mighty Yudhamanyu and very powerful Uttamauja, the son of Subhadra and the sons of Draupadi. All these are great fighters."

"O best of the twice-born, but take note of the captains of my army. I tell who are especially powerful, for your information."

"Your good self, Bhishma, Karna, Kripa, Ashwatthama, Vikarna and the son of Somadatta, called Bhurishrava, are always victorious in battle."

"Many others are prepared to die for me. All are equipped with a variety of weapons, and all are experienced in military science."

"Our strength is immeasurable and protected perfectly by Bhishma, whereas their strength is inadequate, protected by Bhima."
